Priorities are changing and the simple things in life have become more important.  

Above all health and fitness have taken on a new meaning.  All the health issues associated with poor diet and lack of exercise have made people more vulnerable to Covid-19 – obesity, diabetes, heart disease…..

Many people have taken up exercise over the last few months and made it a priority in their lives.  If you are one of those people, or you are still thinking of making those changes there is no better time.

There is no excuse for having a poor diet with the range of great foods available and there is no excuse not to exercise.  Going to the gym provides focus, you meet other like minded people, you can get help to meet your specific goals and a routine which is so important to getting consistency needed for long term change.

Going to the gym is an enormous help mentally, and a lot of people have suffered a deterioration in mental health from not being able to go. As many of you know the gym got me through my mental breakdown and I have come back stronger than ever! Home workouts are great but they don’t really substitute fully and you don't get the vibe.  Don’t forget them though as still a great addition for when you cant get to the gym.

If you have never been in a gym, now is the time to go.  Don’t worry if you have never been before, they are there to help and will guide you around the equipment and make sure you feel comfortable.  Don’t just go to the gym and randomly move from machine to machine without a purpose. You must have a plan, a purpose and regular routine so that you can see the results weekly.  If you do this results come surprisingly quickly!

Without the diet you wont get far… there are lots of different diets out there to suit different people and lifestyles, but you cant beat the simplicity of my philosophy which is to eat natural foods and avoid processed foods – where all the hidden fats and sugars hide that lead to body fat increases. Just by cutting out processed foods you will feel better, look better and see a big impact on the scales.

HOW TO SURVIVE AT HOME AGAIN!!

It looks like we are all on lockdown AGAIN in Europe and this can be tough for us all, not just physically but mentally too, so it’s key we keep ourselves busy. If we choose to just sit around doing nothing then this will 100% have a knock on effect leading to low motivation, low mood & low energy.

Let’s Step It Up!

It’s all about routine & setting one up that allows us to feel as we have a purpose and are still achieving goals. Set up your day with structure, for example my own routine looks something like this….

  • Wake up and have breakfast (porridge with added whey protein and scrambled eggs, maybe some blueberries or a banana)
  • Answer emails replying to all you guys crushing my plans & maybe post on IG/Snapchat
  • Home workout
  • Cook and eat lunch (chicken breast and salad or veg and an apple)
  • Tidying up and cleaning up my house!
  • Answer more emails and some other work, and IG/Snapchat
  • Round 2 workout - Cardio or Abs
  • Dinner (turkey, or a steak maybe and rice or sweet potato)
  • Review custom plans, check other work stuff
  • Movie and bed!

Put specific times to what you have planned...schedule a Facetime call with family or a friend, get out in your garden if you have one, do your cardio outside as your daily exercise out of the house.

This is what drives me each day to still get out there and make it happen. The home workouts I know can be tough as we have limited equipment but this can also be a time to try new styles of training, try new exercises, improve technique, all which can still get us results and take us outside our comfort zone.

When it comes to diet it’s all about staying on track alongside your training. I’ve just started cutting so it’s important I have a routine with specific times to eat, to stop me thinking about food and snacking.  Just as if it was a normal week we can’t let our hard work with home workouts go to waste. Plus eating healthy is key at a time like this to keep our immune system strong and to feel good within ourselves. Don’t forget the green veg and fruit! Now we have more time on our hands we can also prep our foods, make new recipes which can all prepare us for when the gyms do open back up and we can come back stronger than before.

How Hard Do You Actually Train?

When I first started in the gym some 10 years ago, I thought I trained hard!  But looking back I am amazed how much I have stepped up my game – not just how much I train, but how I lift now compared to then.  Results will always come down to how hard you train in the gym and your commitment outside of the gym – I get faster and better results now I know more about what it means to train to the max. 

I often see people in the gym probably thinking they are training hard….BUT I can see it’s only 50% or 70% of their true potential.  It took me a long time to master “Mind to Muscle”, being able to isolate in my mind the muscle I want to work,  and translate it into the focused physical effort on the muscle.  It’s easy to allow other muscles to come into play, taking some of the strain, so make sure you are engaging the right muscle and avoid engaging opposing muscles.  People tend to focus on lifting a weight from a to b without really thinking about how they are doing it. 

And don’t forget the pain!  How much pain can you really take?  If you want out of the ordinary results you will need to experience a lot of pain…..though make sure it’s the right kind of pain by ensuring you always use safe form.

And finally, Prepare your Mind and Body before going to the gym, Commit mentally before you get to the gym and once there Focus, thinking about nothing else other than smashing your session, taking yourself outside of your comfort zone every time!  Don’t be chatting to people you know in the gym, even during rest!!  This is when you should be focusing on, and preparing for, the next set.  Ask yourself questions…. Am I really training to failure? Am I letting the reps win – could I have done one more in the last set?  Did I just give up when I could have used Rest Pause?

Don’t relax until you are into your stretching session after finishing your program.  Then take the time to Reflect and be Honest with Yourself...... is there something you could have improved, or could you have lifted a little more, or done more reps…….

IF YOU WANT TO BE A BEAUTY YOU HAVE TO TRAIN LIKE A BEAST!!  IF YOU TRAIN LIKE A LIMP SAUSAGE THAT IS WHAT YOU WILL BE!

STICKING WITH IT!!

I see and hear way too much of people switching & swapping around their diets & training regimes. Just as they have started to make some progress they are on to another diet or training routine, when what they need to do is stick with it, gain from it, learn from it and then move on.

Remember, your own progress will be your ultimate motivation.  If you are constantly swapping and changing, based on what someone told you or following the latest fad, then progress will be slow or even non-existent, leading to your motivation being eroded away.  Our bodies love a routine, so it's all about getting the body into one, and sticking with it to make the most significant progress. 

Don't overload yourself with a ton of information - it will only end in confusion and disappointment.  I have always kept to the basics..... 8 years of the most simple methods have been the way forward for me and will be for you too.  A simple and easy to follow, structured Diet Plan & Training Plan.  Keeping it simple so we can focus on what really matters and that is STICKING WITH IT!
